FASHION FLASHBACK: TAYLOR-MADE

Elizabeth Taylor was the epitome of Old Hollywood glamour. When it came to her signature style, she was iconic. This raven-haired beauty was infamous for her beautiful face that radiated like a true star and her perfect hourglass figure. The definition of sexy should have a photo of Taylor next to it, because she knew how to work her assets. The legendary costume designer and Hollywood's 1st Stylist, Edith Head custom designed Taylor's signature red carpet looks. Daring necklines, ample cleavage, dark thick eye brows, and her Cleopatra-like eyelashes set her apart from the rest of Tinseltown. Pushing the boundaries of fashion, she continued to turn heads decade after decade.

In 1943, at the tender age of 11, Taylor made us fall in love with her in the screen debut of National Velvet. This sweet-faced child had us in the palm of her hand.

Her teenage years saw her more carefree and feminine with off the shoulder and lace detailing in delicate fabrics. It never mattered what she wore, when she walked into a room, she lit it up!

As the world watched her grow into a lovely young lady, she embraced Dior's "The New Look" with ease and sophistication. She made the long skirts look effortless.

In 1950, Taylor married Conrad "Nicky" Hilton. Yes, that would be the grandfather of Paris & Nicky. Lovely in lace, her gown was elegantly draped to fit her figure.

In the 50's square necklines and halters showed off her curvy figure gracefully.

End of the 50's, Taylor loved her bra-tops and high-waisted shorts and dared to be different. (Photo from the set of Giant.)

The 60s were a sexy time for Taylor and with Cleopatra came ample cleavage.

The 70's saw Taylor strut her stuff in short mini-skirts.

And who could forget her elaborate headpieces. This trendsetter was setting the bar for what was hot.

As Taylor grew older, her style became bolder! The 80's were an interesting time in fashion period, but Elizabeth always found herself making bold fashion statements- whether it was feathers, boas, or big shoulders.

In 1997, the CFDA honored her with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Glamour. In true, Taylor style, she opted for a white silk caftan which was classic and chic. Taylor knew how to dress with finesse.

Even a wheelchair, couldn't keep this diva down on her fashion choices. Taylor was known for her diamonds and furs, she was the Queen of Luxury.

Today, we say goodbye to an actress, a mother, a daughter, a grandmother, philanthropist, designer, but we also say goodbye to a Style Legend. Her beauty and extraordinary style will be forever missed. She defines 'Glamazon' for me.

MACY'S MAKES THE MAN: MATTHEW WILLIAMSON

MACY'S MAKES THE MAN. Matthew Williamson fans, take note! The designer, whose A-list followers include Blake Lively and Cat Deeley, is teaming up with Macy’s this spring, which means you’ll be able to score his punchy prints at a much lower price point. Williamson, who recently launched a bridal collection, has created a 30-piece, ’70s-inspired line for the retailer, WWD reports. Expect to see lots of embellished dresses, printed scarves, rompers, and leather and suede jackets priced from $50 to $300. “The collection aims to capture the essence of the mainline brand, with a focus on effortless glamour; dynamic prints; loosely structured silhouettes, and pops of strong color,” said Williamson. Excited? Us too! The collection will be available in stores and online April 13, but check in next week, when we’ll post a sneak peek of the pieces.

BUILDING AN EMPIRE: RYAN HABER COLLECTION

They say Rome wasn't built in a day, and this is true, but with the Roman Empire being one of the strongest in history, there are many lessons that can be learned. Italy is known for the best in fashion, footwear, and food. Ryan Haber is emersing himself in everything Italy has to offer, Ryan Haber, is an American luxury women's footwear designer. He is building his empire as he arrives in Italia to design his Spring/Summer 2012 collection. His mantra is "What's your Story", and it's true every moment, experience, or event is just another sentence, paragraph, or chapter on our journey. I met Ryan a few months ago via our favorite social networking site, Twitter and the sparks ignited. His passion is sole-deep (lol) and his determination is endless. Our partnership has already been a very rewarding one. I've gotten interest from Adam Glassman from Oprah asking for a press kit, Nina Garcia at Marie Claire curious about the samples, and even Robbie Williams' wife wanting a pair, there is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Louboutin is gonna have a lil competition. Looks like there are alot of people who are wanting to join Ryan on his journey, . . .and why not take this journey in the sexiest heels you can find!

Interwining his love of architecture and his love of what he considers to be the sexiest part of a woman's body, her feet, it was only natural that Haber design shoes. This "Ladies' Man" knows what women want and is determined to show the world and women alike, exactly what belongs on their beautifully pedicured feet. After getting some hands-on experience working for Steve Madden and BCBG, he was able to take that knowledge and harness it into something new, fresh, and edgy.

Want to know how Ryan's Italian adventure goes?? Follow him on Twitter.com/RyanHaber. But just so you can see what our fav guy is getting into, . . .here are a few of the things that he has gotten into the past 24 hrs. Italy's culture is to Love Life. As an Italian, we are taught to value the important things in life- fun, family, and food! Looks like Ryan is embracing the culture just fine, . . .

CAMILA ALVES: TRUE GODDESS

Written & Styled by Toni Ferrara
The name Camila Alves is synonymous with fashion and true style. Recognizable as the host of Bravo’s hit series “Shear Genius”, she’s graced the pages of many magazines all over the world, and maybe you’ve even heard of her boyfriend, Matthew McConaughey or you’ve seen her playing with her children on the beaches of Malibu, but this Brazilian beauty is much more than a girlfriend, model, and a mother, she’s a philanthropist and a handbag designer.

At the age of fifteen, when most teens aren’t even sure what their future holds, Camila moved to the United States with her strong entrepreneurial dreams and has no plan on stopping anytime soon. Starting off her career in New York City, her first modeling contract landed her a billboard on Times Square. Her strong work ethic, along with her, unparallel level of professionalism makes her unforgettable. Although she travels the world constantly, she now calls Southern California home.

Camila showed up to the shoot at a private residence in Bel Air wearing a flowy white top and a great pair of jeans. Her beautiful boho style is effortless. She greeted and introduced herself to everyone on set while radiating the true essence of beauty. Rarely do you meet a woman with such a beautiful spirit, as well, as physically stunning. But Camila possesses both with a natural ease. This real life goddess demonstrates strength and passion for her family and work. No wonder why her keen eye for fashion has lead her to creating her own handbag line.

ABOUT MUXO.
The line is pronounced “Moo-show”. It means a goddess of the water in an African language. The word is spelled backwords, because I like a twist. I was modeling at the time, we were looking for an extra way to make a lil more money to help our family back home. In Brazilian culture, once you leave, you always look out for the family. My mom has three degrees in design in Brazil and she’s very talented. We decided to get together and create a product.

ON THE VERY FIRST SAMPLE.

The first handbag that we made, I was kinda like, “umm I’m not sure.” I was traveling all over the world for modeling and I decided to take it with me to see what response I would get. And at every airport I was at, I was getting people stopping me to me ask me about it and we started getting orders. Then it grew to people asking me, “can you make it in this color? Can you make it this size or that size?“ That’s how we got started and we’ve been doing this for about five years now.

ON PAULISTA’S SISTER.

Paulista’s Little Sister was the first bag that we ever made. We use to work out of an apartment when we first started. I remember we use to go to the parking lot of a school to hammer the tassels because we couldn’t make that much noise in our apartment. The cops would come and we would hide in our cars. Since then we have a studio where we design and create our bags.

ON HER INSPIRATION.

Each collection we get inspired by our surroundings-- one collection we have is inspired by Brazil, New York, and Los Angeles, just places that I am from. I use to live in New York and now I live in LA. Our current collection is inspired by a road trip that I took all over the United States. It was influenced by the colors, cultures, and landscapes. Our business is so great in the United States that we wanted a way to give back somehow. Before all of our materials came from Brazil and a part of production there as well. And what we did now because this collection is so American inspired, we are doing everything here. Our buyers for materials and production is here. Everything we are sourcing is from here. And even the labor is here in the United States. Me and my mother touch every single handbag, as crazy as that sounds, there are certain finishing techniques, like artwork that we do on each handbag and it’s funny because we won’t teach or tell anyone else how to do it.

WHY MUXO IS BETTER THAN THE COMPETITION

Before we put handbags out there, my mom and I really researched to see what we could do different compared to everyone else. But I definitely have done my research and I know that we are doing something so unique. Even our fringe bags, you see thousands of fringe bags, but none of the fringe bags you see look even similar to our bags.

FANS OF MUXO.

We have a lot of fans of our handbags. We have girls who save up to purchase a bag and others who collect them. Our fans take photos of themselves with the bags and send it to us. Recently, we had a young boy write to us because his mother was battling cancer and her dying wish was to own a MUXO bag. So I decided to sign the bag and take a photo with it. I sent it the bag to her. Within a week, I received a letter saying thank you and a photo of her with the handbag in the same pose that I was in. It’s the things that our fans do that makes me realize what an impact we have.

A HANDBAG WITH A SIGNIFICANT MEANING

I love all the bags. The Queen of the Sea is a very special bag, because each piece of fringe is hand sewn to the bag. Every person who works on the bag loves what they do so it gives the bag a sense of life. The other bag is a black one, the Malibu. It’s a woven bag. That bag is absolutely beautiful in person. There is only two of those handbags available now. I had one that I had given away. Now, I have one for an event that we have going on in December and the other for a very special person. It’s a limited edition because we can’t make it anymore in Brazil.

DEFINING THE MUXO GIRL.

Every girl can be a MUXO girl. We have handbags for every single woman. The one important thing that is special about our girl is that she doesn’t follow trends. It’s not about what’s in right now in the magazines or what some actress is wearing-- it’s about when she finds herself in the handbag. She loves the bag and finds herself sexy.

ON WHAT SHE CARRIES IN HER HANDBAG.

I try not to carry that much stuff in my handbag. I keep a lot of receipts, always have bobby pins or hair ties, and a natural color lipstick. You know what is funny that I do have, I carry my old wallet. I have had it forever, even though I have a new wallet, I still carry the old one with me for a good luck charm.

WHAT INSPIRES HER PERSONAL STYLE.

To be honest with you, I don’t try to take it too serious with what I am going to wear. I’m busy, so if I get a chance to be inspired the next day that is awesome. I don’t like to follow any rule. If you go to my closet, you will find a little bit of everything. Most people’s closet is all organized with a similar color or style. My closet you will find everything and anything. You will find pieces that I had purchased five or ten years ago that I still use.

HOW SHE JUGGLES IT ALL (Modeling, Motherhood, Hosting, Philanthropic Endeavours, and Designing)

It is a lot. We are very busy. My family has a schedule. My work has a schedule. And with my work, I have more than one thing going on at a time. It can get tricky. Organization is the best way to get around those things. I am not that good at it, I am learning to be better at it. But that is just basically how it is. I like being busy. I enjoy it. I have always worked my whole life. From very early on, I have always worked very hard to get anything. I like working. I have to work. If I didn’t, I’d probably drive everyone around me crazy. My days are always long. When everyone goes home to relax, I am usually still working.

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING DESIGNERS.

Make sure you love what you do. Because it is hard to go back once you start. It’s a lot of work. Do your research. Make sure it’s realistic and never give up. Stay true to who you are. Don’t let people try to tell you that you can’t. We had a lot of stores that initially said no to us, but then after a while came around and now carry our line.

THE MUST-HAVE HANDBAG FOR WINTER 2010.

I think the ‘Queen of the Sea’ is a great bag to have. We did this bag years and years ago. And it has fringe which is right on trend. Because fringe is in right now from what I see and read. But we have had this bag before the trends were predicted.

ON WHAT KEEPS HER MOTIVATED.

It’s fun. I started it because of my mom. When I first came to this country, I was cleaning houses, waiting tables, then modeling. Then my mom came over and started cleaning houses. I started this for her. I love the working relationship with my mom. It’s a very emotional thing. But I love the feeling after we do something and it becomes real. A lot of people don’t understand the process that goes into creating a product. Many people claim to be designers, but it’s a different process when you are actually a part of your product. The difference between me and other designers is that we start from beginning to end. It’s a very satisfying feeling when I create something. I am proud of the work that we do. We are genuinely doing something that we love. We never follow the trends, we just do what we love.

SOME OF HER FAVORITE DESIGNERS.

Some of my favorite designers are Dolce Gabbana and Marchesa. They are completely different in structures. Marchesa is more of a flowy and a goddess-like thing. The Dolce Gabbana is very va-va-voom. A lot of corsetry and more structured. I love how it shapes your body.

ON PHILANTHROPIC ENDEAVOURS.

We have a charity, that we are proud of which is called the J.K. Livin Foundation. It’s an after school program that is dedicated to helping teenage kids lead active lives and make healthy choices to become great men and women. They have the opportunity to work out in a safe environment, how to eat healthy on a low budget and to have gratitude in their life. We also teach them to give back to the community that has given them so much. Right now, we have three schools in Los Angeles and one in Austin, Texas that are participating. It’s a project that I am very proud of.

ON THE FUTURE.

Who knows. Let’s hope a lot. Aside from Muxo, I am very active in the J.K. Livin Foundation and I am working on another charity, as well. Work wise, we have a lot of projects coming up, but I can’t really speak about it right now. I can tell you one, I am excited to be designing a line of Muxo bags for QVC. But the rest, I have to leave some things a mystery.

TREND PAGE: CORAL TREASURES

Before Gaga, before Madonna, . . .there was Veronica Franco

The word provocative is defined as serving or tending to provoke, excite, or stimulate; stimulating discussion or exciting controversy; "a provocative remark"; "a provocative smile"; "provocative Irish tunes which...compel the hearers to dance. Those are just some of the emotions that can be evoked from viewing the hit play "Dangerous Beauty" currently at the Pasadena Playhouse now until March 13th. Before there was the edgy Lady Gaga, or the outrageous shock-and-awe of Madonna, . . .there was Veronica Franco.

Veronica Franco comes to life, played by Jenny Powers in this adaptation of the original play. Franco was a famous Italian poet and courtesan in 16th century Venice.

I had the pleasure of styling Jenny Powers for a shoot in our Spring Issue of Beverly Hills LifeStyle Magazine. We kept the fierce, provocative, and yet sexy-side of her character with a couture twist. Take a look at the magic we created!

"When we too are armed and trained, we can convince men that we have hands, feet, and a heart like yours; and although we may be delicate and soft, some men who are delicate are also strong; and others, coarse and harsh, are cowards. Women have not yet realized this, for if they should decide to do so, they would be able to fight you until death; and to prove that I speak the truth, amongst so many women, I will be the first to act, setting an example for them to follow."

SWIMWEAR TRENDS 2011

Suit by Paul & Joe
PATTERN-MAKER. Although solid-color swimwear is classic and versatile, we know that many of you are looking for something a little more exciting and want a more unique piece of swimwear this year. Fortunately, patterned swimwear abounds this spring, with styles ranging from simple, two-color patterns to kaleidoscope-resembling pieces. You may have your work cut out for you in deciding just which suit to make yours.

Some of the items in Milly’s 2011 collection channeled looks from earlier decades, such as the high-waisted two-piece suit in a brown and white pattern. Bluegirl kept it sweet with a romantic ruffled bikini in a blue and yellow dot pattern, accented with small ruffles and bows. A pink dress coat topped off the look during the show.

For more skin-baring opportunities, check out Paul & Joe’s itty bitty bikini decorated with a geometric pattern in yellow, white, black, blue, and pink. Vanessa Bruno’s green, pink, and black bandeau bikini is another way to show off a well-toned stomach.

If you’re not up for committing to just one swimwear trend, you can incorporate patterns into one of your other favorite spring 2011 looks, for example, slimming cutouts. Vanessa Bruno showed a number of patterned suits during her spring show, including a one-piece style with cutouts on the waist. A strap around the waist accented the pattern, a checkered theme in yellow and brown. Emilio Pucci’s geometric-based patterned suit, also a one-piece, included large cutouts on the waist.

Suit by Agua De Coco
COLD SHOULDER. One-shoulder swimwear styles are a great way to combine the sexiness of shoulder-baring bandeau styles with the practicality and versatility of strappy suits. Although strapless styles are great for lounging on the beach and walking around poolside, Bold Bandeaus are not always the best choice when faced with a dip in a wave-filled ocean.

White Sands Australia included a one-shoulder suit during its spring 2011 show that featured a large side cutout and a black and white floral pattern. For a classic look that also helps camouflage a tummy, consider Agua De Coco's grey one-shoulder style featuring rouching all over the body of the suit. Swimwear Anywhere and Paul & Joe also included one-shoulder styles in their 2011 collections; Swimwear Anywhere's suit was covered in a blue and purple geometric pattern while Paul & Joe's suit featured a pattern with tribal roots.

If you're looking for an edgier or more unique style, you don't have to look very far. VPL included a one-shoulder suit in its 2011 spring collection; this yellow and brown item combined a bandeau top, a one shoulder strap, and a cutout on the suit bottom. Tsumori Chisato's one-shoulder number featured a bright yellow shoulder strap, a black body, and a large printed eye surrounded by red eyelash-like accents.

Suit by Michael Kors
ELEGANTLY WAISTED. While some of the spring 2011 swimwear trends, such as Sexy Cutouts and A Hint of Lingerie, require a bit of a daring streak, we here at SwimwearTrends.com know that not all of our readers are up for making such bold statements. Fortunately, there are lots of swimwear trends to choose from to make spring 2011 your most fashionable swimwear season yet without having all eyes on you. Why not accent an otherwise simple suit with some Serious Hardware? Whether a simple O-shaped ring between the triangles of a bikini top or elaborately woven pieces on both sides of a bikini bottom, hardware make a great statement. Complement your adorned swimwear with accessories in a similar style, such as a pair of woven sandals or large, gold jewelry.

There was a lot of hardware on the runways during the spring 2011 fashion shows. Beach Bunny Swimwear showed a simple white bikini accented with brown hardware between the two triangles of the bikini top and on both sides of the bottom. The look was complemented by turquoise bracelets and dangling earrings. Caffe Swimwear featured two accented looks: a white bikini with gold hardware pieces and a one-piece cutout style decorated with gold along the sides. Rag & Bone showed a daring black style with two large buckles on either side of a cutout over the chest. For a more subdued look, consider Michael Kors' brown one piece suit completed by a large, brown belt or Poko Pano's simple brown bikini with woven hardware on the bottom side.

Suit by Beach Bunny Swim
LINGERIE-LIKE. If you're looking for a bit of a controversial swimwear trend for the coming spring, or searching for something with that "wow" factor, take a hint from lingerie. Many designers showed swimwear during their spring 2011 fashion shows that closely resembled lingerie pieces; in fact, some of them so closely mirrored lingerie styles that it was hard to tell the difference between the two.

The delicate and subtle detailing, feminine colors, and flattering shapes of lingerie have been mirrored in these new lingerie-inspired swimwear styles and if you dare, purchase yourself a beautiful new piece of swimwear cut from the same cloth as your favorite lingerie and let your femininity speak volumes.

Agua De Coco's grey style resembled a simple strapless bra and a matching swim bottoms, enhanced by a simple geometric stitching pattern in the same shade of grey. Beach Bunny Swimwear's show featured two pieces resembling items of lingerie, but with very different looks. The first style, an all-black bandeau and matching bottoms, featured lots of lace and a sheer look across the chest. The second number, in a brilliant teal blue, was a halter style accented with black lace. Lisa Blue's lingerie-inspired swimsuit was designed in feminine hues of pink and purple, while Poko Pano's version stuck to the classic and sexy lingerie color of black. Marysia's lingerie-inspired swimwear was a tribute to earlier decades and featured a high-waisted bottom and a delicate top with modest coverage.
